Why have I dedicated an entire blog to hemp protein? One of the many good reasons is to introduce you, dear reader, to a food that should be in your diet to help you maintain a healthy weight. Every year one of the top three New Year Resolutions made is to lose weight. This makes sense because in America during 2008, over 26% of us met the criteria for obese and 60% of us are overweight. Americans spend between 40 billion to 60 billion dollars a year on products made by the diet industry and with those stats we aren’t getting a very good return on that investment as the “how large can we get” trends are still on the rise.
I think there are multiple American factors involved as to why the diet industry rakes in enough money to make a hefty dent in the national deficit every year. One of those factors is our propensity to want a quick, painless and easy fix to our problems. Why American’s are prone to that behavior is the subject for another article. Because we seek the “magic bullet” to solve problems, we ignore reality and the tried and true and human way to lose weight and be healthy. That is to have a diet that consists primarily of vegetables, fruits and grains and does not depend on animal products, sugar and processed food-like products. This is where hemp protein comes in.
I can already hear you worrying, “but if I eat mainly vegetarian, how will I get enough protein?” Enter the educational blog about hemp food products and hemp protein in particular. Adding hemp protein to a mostly or all vegetarian diet provides you with a plant based protein that contains all of the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids a person needs to sustain a healthy human life.
Another reason you should be taking a look at adding hemp protein to your diet regimen is because it helps you build lean muscle while other misguided diet schemes result in the dieter losing muscle mass. Those complete amino acids help with that as does the enzymes, healthy bacteria and essential fatty acids necessary for muscle growth, recovery and fat burning. Because most hemp proteins are not heat treated (unlike whey), they contain enzymes that function to synthesize amino acids into new muscle.
A third reason is because it comes in a wide variety of food forms!! Sure you can have the organic hemp protein shake, but we can’t live on shakes alone. Hemp also is consumable as a cereal, tea, oil, flour, grain, waffles, hemp tofu (hempfu?), nut butter, hulled hemp seed and even hemp milk.
So stock up on the fruits, veggies and start experimenting with America’s new super-food, hemp. If you’ve got any good suggestions about yummy hemp protein products I’d love for you to add your comments! Happy New Year and happy healthy eating.
